Why vitamin D?

The body needs vitamin D for our bones and muscles to remain strong. Several studies also show that vitamin D may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
However, because of the latitude of Canada, some Canadians might not get enough of this vitamin, especially in the autumn and winter seasons. Exposure to sunlight for short periods and taking supplements are the best ways to get sufficient vitamin D. Note: It is important that sunlight exposure is done in moderation to avoid exposure which increases their risk of skin cancer. There is no requirement to be all tanned! Daily exposure without protection for a few minutes is usually sufficient. If someone is over 50 years of age, dark skin, does not go outside often, or wears clothing that covers most of their skin than it is recommended these people take a daily vitamin D supplement (1,000 IU) or weekly (10 000 IU) in Canada. We can also increase our reserves by eating salmon, canned tuna, cow's milk, soy milk and other fortified beverages (almonds, rice ...), egg yolks, most margarines and yogurt made with enriched milk.
So, enjoy the summer and don`t forget that sunscreen when going out for more than 5 minutes!
